In Everything Give Thanks
Message by ELDER PAUL YEE
Elder Paul Yee begins by reflecting on how, unlike Jesus’ earthly ministry where only a few disciples had close access to Him, believers today have direct access to God through the Holy Spirit because of Jesus’ departure. He then introduces the concept of Thanksgiving, explaining its historical roots among Christian pilgrims in America who gave thanks to God after surviving hardship and experiencing a successful harvest. However, he laments that modern Thanksgiving celebrations often focus more on culture, food, and entertainment than on genuinely acknowledging God as the source of blessing.
The sermon emphasizes that true thanksgiving is not merely a feeling but an active expression of gratitude directed toward a recipient, especially God. Using examples such as receiving a car from one’s father, Elder Paul explains that genuine gratitude must be personally expressed to the giver. He highlights several biblical passages, including 1 Thessalonians 5:18 and of Psalms, to show that thanksgiving is commanded by God and is foundational in a believer’s relationship with Him. Elder Paul further explains the spiritual progression of thanksgiving, praise, and worship. Thanksgiving welcomes and acknowledges God, praise magnifies His greatness above every problem, and worship brings believers into intimate communion with Him. He teaches that thanksgiving changes the spiritual atmosphere by shifting hearts from focusing on lack to recognizing God’s abundant provision and ongoing blessings, while praise and worship draw believers deeper into God’s presence and transform their perspective.
Finally, the sermon warns about the dangers of failing to give thanks to God. Without gratitude, a person’s relationship with God becomes shallow and transactional, treating Him merely as a provider of needs rather than honoring Him personally. Such an attitude can lead to entitlement, ingratitude, and taking God’s blessings and presence for granted.
